While many believe that hospice is a place, it’s more accurate to think of hospice as an important service provided to patients and families in their own setting. The vast majority of those who receive Hospice of Cincinnati care remain in their homes or in the nursing home where they reside. Other, generally more acute patients may require care in one of our four “homelike” inpatient care centers.

As a distinctive service to our patients, Hospice of Cincinnati offers the most comprehensive care options offered anywhere. The real advantage for our patients and families is these options include choosing the location that best suits the unique needs and condition of the patient.

Hospice is an approach and a philosophy of compassion, support and symptom management.

The hospice philosophy is one of caring for patients whose medical conditions are not responding to treatment or for patients who choose not to seek aggressive medical care for their conditions. It is a program for patients who are considered terminal and are expected to live for six months or less if the disease follows its natural course...... although many patients outlive this time frame.

The hospice philosophy focuses on comfort care, not curative care. The goal of this care is for the patient to be as comfortable and pain-free as possible while receiving emotional, psychological and spiritual support if the patient and/or family members choose to avail themselves of these types of services.

Hospice care can be provided in the home, in a long term care facility, in an assisted-living facility or in a hospice inpatient facility (such as one of Hospice of Cincinnati’s four home-like care centers).
